Bilateral and bimodal neurons in the postcentral gyrus of awake monkeys

Yoshiaki Iwamura

We found neurons with bilateral or ipsilateral receptive fields in the postcentral gyrus of awake monkeys. Such neurons were observed in areas 2 and 5 in the digit region and in areas 3, 1, 2, and 5 in the arm-shoulder and trunk regions. In the latter region receptive fields became more complex toward the caudal part of the gyrus. We also found neurons responding to both somatic and visual stimuli in these regions. Some of the bimodal neurons had bilateral receptive fields.
